This was a common response to the announcement of our cruise toAlaska in September with Holland America Line.
It had long been on my dream list. I yearned to visit Alaska and a cruise seemed like a fabulous way to see it. There were so many choices, but we left things really late and all of a sudden it was the end of the season with only 4 more ships heading to Alaska. Two of those were the Westerdam and Noordam.Holland America Gambling Agent
So when Holland America suggested we take their final cruise of the season from Vancouver toAlaska aboard the msNoordam, it fit in perfectly to our schedule. Alaska would be sandwiched between our archery tournament in sunny Spokane, Washington and a housesitting assignment in Kelowna, Canada.
But like most of our readers, we were curious. Would Holland America be as family friendly as the other cruise lines we had enjoyed? They have a well-established reputation to be suited towards more mature guests, so we put them to the test.
Here’s how Holland America rated on our 5 most important factorsfor a fabulous family cruise. 1. Club HAL: Kids Just Want To Have Fun
Our kids’ favourite part of any cruise is the kids club and yes, Holland America has one. Since school had started again and it was the last cruise of the season, our boat only had 5 children. However the cruise following ours from Vancouver to Seattle (on a weekend) was booked with over 200 kids. A few of the Alaska cruises during the summer vacation period had up to 800 junior members.
The kids club ran on a pre-planned schedule, which was provided to us each evening prior. The staff mentioned when we first met that it was going to be harder to run a few of the games and activities because of the lack of children. Mia and Caius found themselves in Club HAL alone most of the time, which they loved anyway. They were given lots of attention, were able to dictate some of the more fun crafts, and of course did not have to share the computer games.
Our kids enjoyed all the activities and Club HAL staff were always friendly and looked like they enjoyed being there too. Facilities were pretty good and well maintained.
There were only two real snags we found with Club HAL.
The first there was no food or drinks allowed in the Club, and that extended to water. Our kids complained regularly about being thirsty in the kids club and were told there was no water. We ended up sending water bottles to the club with the kids because of dehydration concerns. Most cruise ships disallow refilling water bottles from water dispensers due to overzealous hygiene concerns.
I did ask the senior child carer about giving the kids water and she was adamant that their policy disallowed all food and drinks. Now this is barely passable during the segmented 2-3 hour kids club sessions (although I personally think all kids need water more regularly to avoid dehydration). But if a parent is off-ship during a port day from 9am – 4pm (kids do get a lunch break) then this could really become a concern.
The second snag we hit was the segmented Club HAL hours. Most days the Club was open 9 – 11:30am, 1 – 4pm and 7 – 10pm. Port days it was 9am – 4pm and then 7pm – 10pm.
I have never encountered cruise kids club hours like this. Most cruise lines offer kids programs from 10am – 10pm. I found the hours frustrating. We had just dropped the kids off and relaxed in the hot tub when it was time to pick them up again. We also found dinner times a slight struggle because of the relatively late starting time.
I did ask staff if schedules were different on cruises with more kids and was informed this was standard hours.
Now for a regular family that are going on vacation to spend time with each other these enforced hours may be a great way to balance a little adult time with family time. But for Josh and I who spend every day with our kids, and looking forward to a little kid-free time, it was just frustrating. The kids didn’t want to have to keep leaving Club HAL and we didn’t want to only do a 2-hour activity.2. Food, Glorious Food
The next most important thing on a family cruise.. food! Since this was our 5th cruise we feel like we have a firm grasp on the range of cruise cuisine quality. Carnival served the same food in the formal dining room as the buffet. Royal Caribbean had a touch more quality. But Holland America surpassed both.
On the Noordam there were only the two free options to eat at; Lido (buffet) and Vista (a la carte). An Italian restaurant called Canaletto required a $10pp cover charge which was reasonable considering the Michelin-star quality.
And the aptly named Pinnacle delivered ultra fine dining for only an extra $29pp - a relative bargain.
Kids adored all the eating venues, especially the Vista dining room with its crayons and hand-made origami animals by perpetually smiling wait staff. Our regular waiters remembered the kids’ food preferences and were even happy to organise special off-menu dishes.
It’s safe to say our kids rated the food on Noordam 10 out of 10.

There may not have been waterslides on board, but who would be using them in Alaska anyway? The ship was perfect for the region we were in.

You have never truly lived until you soak in a steamy hot tub watching majestic glaciers in Alaska. Or if you want the full effect, try the Polar Bear Plunge like my husband and daughter. Yup, they jumped into the pool and then stood in the arctic wind for one whole minute at the back of the ship. Crazies!
Like most cruise lines Holland America provides plenty to do on board the boat other than the kids club. My kids enjoyed a game of shuffleboard, basketball, BINGO and even a cooking class or two.
The nightly shows were excellent. Several acts straight from Las Vegas headlined the cruise, and the regular Noordam singers and dancers added their energetic shows to round off the 7-night cruise. 4. The Crew
A large percentage of the staff on Holland America’s Noordam was from Indonesia. As travellers who have been to Bali 10 times we know a little of the language and it was lovely to see their eyes light up when we spoke to them (albeit a bit rusty).
Each night at the Vista restaurant the kid’s entrees would be ready and waiting on the table when we arrived. The lovely Gede would rush over and hand them cute origami animals which induced smiles and giggles.
Bambang, our room attendant, always had animal towels on the beds and kept the room spotless. He also loved asking the kids how their day was and interacted with them at every opportunity.
Mia talked fondly of one of her kid’s clubs teachers. She couldn’t wait for each port day (I didn’t get offended, sniff sniff). Although she did not want to get off the ship, she did want to see what port character would be making an appearance and get her photo taken – bear, eagle, polar bear, moose, etc. 5. The Stateroom
We stayed in a Verandah Suite and I’d forgotten how small rooms were on cruises – just like New York! :D But what I liked about this room was that one bed was behind a curtain and the other was on top of us. Keeping the kids separate at bed times meant they fell asleep faster.
The floor-to-ceiling sliding door led to a private balcony which gave us stunning views each day. But what was equally impressive was the block-out curtains which helped our kids sleep in each morning. Ahhhh, peace and quiet!
Ample storage space and the bathtub rounded out our family’s favourite features of the stateroom.The Verdict?
Our cruise to Alaska left us really impressed with Holland America Line. The ship had beautiful indoor and outdoor viewing areas for enjoying the glaciers, the food was top notch and the staff were as polite and helpful as you could wish for.
It’s tricky to compare Holland America with other cruise lines. It’s like comparing apples and oranges.
To sum up the style of Holland America - I’d liken it to the European vibe. It is classy, understated, and sophisticated without being ostentatious. It has an unshakable self-confidence with a reserved demeanour. Every aspect of the cruise experience focuses on quality over quantity.
So the big question is.. can you take your kids on a Holland America cruise?
The answer is definitely yes.
Your young ones will feel at home just as much as any other guest. And as a parent, you can feel confident that your well-earned family vacation will be a trip of a lifetime.

With the trend of an increase number of shooters joining the community, we feel a series of basic topics to cover the essentials for those just getting into the firearms community. For today’s topic, lets cover mounting options. So, you got a shiny new AR-15 and want to drop those plastic handguards. You literally have hundreds if not thousands of choices out there. One thing you’ll start to realize very early on is the following terms: Picatinny, KeyMod, and M-LOK. This is the initial choice you should make before narrowing the vast choices you have down. It will determine what and how you will buy accessories to mount going forward. Craps dice roll probability rules. Let’s break it each platform down.

The most familiar and longest running platform of them all. An evolution of the Weaver system and adopted my various militaries across the globe, Picatinny rails are effective and easy to utilize. It has a received a NATO designation of MIL-STD-1913 and is the go to mil-spec process of attaching accessories to a firearm. It has the largest users of any other mounting platform still to this day and for good reason – it’s simple, widely universal, and extremely versatile in the positioning of mounted accessories. Extremely recognizable by it’s distinct horizontal slots precisely spaced to spec across the mountable portions of the handguard – 0.180 in or 4.57mm to be exact. Attaching accessories to a Picatinny rail is as easy as either clamping the add-on to an available slot where you want it and tightening the cross bolt via the thumbscrew, bolt, or QD lever. The accessory stays in place by the center cross bolt locking into the slot and the clamp keeping it tight. Another method is the accessory is slid on from the front of the rail and then locked down once you have it where you want it. This method is common on pistol accessories.
Keymod Or M Lok Slots Free Play
There are a few downsides to this system to keep in mind. The biggest problem is that majority of those Picatinny slots…. are not – and will not ever be used. This results in additional bulk and weight that will make your nimble carbine front heavy and there is nothing I hate more than a grossly unbalanced rifle. The diameter of the handguard will also be noticeably larger than its competitor since there has to be rail on all mounting faces which results in the final complaint: sharp rectangles are not comfortable. If not using any type of foregrip, the slots will cut and dig into your hands, but don’t get me wrong, it’s nothing terrible and it’ll give you some additional grip. All full Picatinny rails will have a blocky feel to them verses their more ergonomic alternatives.Keymod Or M Lok SlotsKeymod Or M Lok Slots No Deposit
Final thoughts on Picatinny Rails – If the blocky feel and additional weight/bulk of the Picatinny platform doesn’t bother you then there is nothing wrong with this tried and true design. You’ll be blessed with almost guaranteed mounting for any mountable accessory without the need of any extra parts or expense. With the endless offerings of this system, you can probably find the cheapest rails in this format.
*KeyMod & M-Lok Universal – Rail Section – 7 Slots Red $ 25.95 Strike Industries LINK attachment system takes the age old question Key-Mod vs. M-Lok and came up with the ultimate solution, a dual interface design compatible with both M-Lok and Key-Mod, same hardware with no need for additional parts.
*Both the KeyMod and M-Lok systems support direct attachment of optics, lasers, flashlights, bipods, and other accessories to a negative space mounting point. In other words, M-Lok and KeyMod both have integrated openings machined directly into the hand guard. Compatible accessories can be mounted to a bracket that locks into those openings.
Originally developed to replace the mil-spec Picatinny rail, it was invented by none other than Noveske who specialize in high end AR systems. Its name derives from it’s key shaped mounting holes and a reference to it’s modularity. KeyMod bases itself on the concept of “Negative Space” mounting where accessories are directly mounted to handguard verses relying on an intermediary interface like the rail slots like on Picatinny. Picatinny rail strips can be added to a KeyMod rail to facilitate the use of Picatinny accessories that still dominate the market. The biggest advantage to this system is that you only add rails or accessories on where you want them. You aren’t stuck with a large amount of space unused thus saving weight and improving ergonomics of the handguard. Attaching an accessory to a KeyMod rail is as follows: The accessory or rail strip possesses a specialized keyed nut and a larger diameter shoe that is loosely attached to the rail or attachment. The larger diameter shoe is then dropped into the larger hole section of the KeyMod handguard and pushed forward. Once pushed forward, the screw is then torqued down so it pulls the shoe towards the rail or attachment and is clamped into place. In the end, you’ll have rail sections or direct mount gun accessories where you want them. KeyMod rails can be more versatile compared to Picatinny as well depending on which one you go with, for example with Picatinny, you can only mount at the 12, 3, 6, and 9 o’clock positions. With certain KeyMod rails, they have the option of mounting at 45-degree points or 2, 5, 8, and 11 o’clock positions.
The KeyMod and M-LOK are based on a slot system rather than the rail system of the Picatinny and Weaver mounts. This means a smoother surface and more mounting options. Both gained popularity since their introduction to the market in the 2010’s — but which system is better? The Patent Pending WedgeLok KeyMod covers securely wedge into KeyMod slots to provide a secure comfortable grip on handguards or other equipment with KeyMod attachment points. Molded with an aggressive texture, the WedgeLok covers are easily installed or removed without tools.
2winpower slots ios. There are very few downsides to KeyMod but one that sticks out in a lot people’s mind is the direction in which it’s in the locked position. The rail or accessories is pushed forward then locked down, the concern is if pulled back hard enough, like a foregrip, it can dis-engage. There have been arguments that the key holes should face the other way so you are pulling TOWARDS the locked position, not away. I have personally never experience this happening but I can see how it’s possible. A minor complaint that some people have is that the keyhole shaped cut-outs have two sharp points and if you have fleshy hands, your skin may squeeze into the keyhole cutouts and can become painful. Again, not a complaint that I personally have had but it’s out there.Keymod Or M Lok Slots
Final Thoughts on KeyMod Handguards – If looking for a slim handguard that’s modular with a large following of adaptation, then there is no reason not to go for one. The actual shape of the KeyMod cutout has a secondary advantage of being able to mount QD slings directly to any of the slots – IF the rail is not too thick and matches the 3/8” diameter QD. If you love to really, REALLY tuck that stock into your shoulder and hulk pull on your foregrip back or you like to use a barricade braces, then look into Picatinny or the next style – M-LOK.
(Modular Lock) – Invented by Magpul, who holds a high standard on quality components, and designed to be an improved alternative to KeyMod. It’s the next evolution of their MOE mounting system and uses the same negative space principal of the KeyMod system. Advantages of the MLOK system are pretty much the same as KeyMod – Slim profile, attach accessories or rails to only where you want them, ability to mount 45-degree positions on some rails, and light weight. The difference (and maybe advantage) is the way rails and accessories mount. MLOK rails use rectangular holes vice keyhole shaped cutouts. There is a rectangular shoe attached to the rail or accessory and is held on by a screw and the shoe is dropped into one of the MLOK cutouts of your choice and the screw is torqued. Once torquing starts, the shoe engages once it turns 90 degrees and is then locked in place. Since MLOK can be engaged and locked in either the forward or rearward position of the MLOK cutout, it does not have the potential issue that KeyMod has and disengaged if pulled hard enough opposite of it’s locked position. If mounting a grip, mount it in the rear position – if mounting a light, then feel free to mount it in the forward position since you are pushing forward to engage a button. MLOK handguards also feel better in the hand if held bare without any attachments. The rectangular cutouts are chamfered so they don’t cut or dig into your skin like Picatinny or KeyMod. This results a very smooth and slim handguard to hold on to if not using a foregrip or angled foregrip.Keymod Or M Lok Slots Quick
Final Thoughts on M-LOK Handguards – MLOK is my personal go to choice for a mounting platform. I typically only mount a light, front sight, and maybe a foregrip, the rest of the time, I prefer to just hold on to the handguard. The smooth snag free finish of the MLOK is a very ergonomic choice and is just as versatile as the other choices with the exception of having to mount a QD attachment for a sling vs the built in QD capability of KeyMod. The number of MLOK compatible direct mount accessories is growing everyday and you can always get rail strips to mount common Picatinny accessories. If you’re a Magpul fan then MLOK is the way to go as it’s their technology so they will base their future products on it. The chance factor comes in with the fact that even though these odds are mathematically true over dozens and hundreds of rolls, and can be trusted to show in these ratios over a larger sample, they won’t “perfectly” occur with human shooters. Thus a shooter who gains six rolls can sometimes roll all six without showing a seven. This is what brings the element of risk and excitement to craps betting.Making Good Odds Bets
There are three groupings of bets that have the best odds and the lowest house edge that a craps player can come by. These are the bread and butter of a craps player’s existence, and the wisest and winningest craps players use these bets like clockwork to maximize their odds of taking home cash, not just laying it down on the table. The free odds bets that go with these are even better from an odds standpoint. The best bets to make in craps, free odds bets multiply a pass or come bet (or a don’t pass or don’t come bet). The advantage of these is the house edge gets lowered to almost zero, meaning players have a good chance of winning these bets at their actual mathematical odds. The odds bets have to be made in conjunction with the main pass/come and don’t pass/don’t come bets. On the right bettor side for pass and come odds bets, making this bet is called “taking the odds.” On the wrong bettor side, odds bets with don’t pass and don’t come bets are called “laying the odds.”

Place bets on six and eight have the third lowest house edge at 1.52%, making them very profitable bets. The odds of winning on place six and place eight bets are 6 to 5 or 45.45%. Payouts are at 7 to 6 odds. For even dollar payouts, player should bet in increments of $6 on these place bets, preventing rounding down by the casino on paying winnings.
Place bets on five and nine are also still lower house edges than most bets on the table at 4%. Players have a 40% chance of winning or 3 to 2 odds, and they payout at 7 to 5 odds. Place these bets in multiples of $5 for even dollar payouts without rounding.
Place bets on four and ten are still decent bets, but the house edge starts to climb–it’s 6.67%. The odds of winning a place four/place ten bet are 33.33% but if it does win, the payout rate is 9 to 5. These bets should also be made in $5 increments for even payout amounts.
Another advantage to place bets is that when a place bet wins, the dealer pays the player’s winnings but leaves the original bet on the table effectively starting another place bet. The player doesn’t have to add money to the bet to continue it. Players can ask the dealer to “turn off” the standing place bet or remove it if they wish.

Proposition bets are mostly single, next roll bets on specific numbers. The rates of the occurrence for the dice roll is the first basis for the enticingly high payouts, but the house edge factors in on the lesser likelihood that the single next roll will produce that number or combination of numbers.
The list of odds for the main proposition bets is as follows:
*Craps 2 or 12 has true odds of 35 to 1, that single dice combination. The payout odds are 30 to 1, with a huge house edge of 13.89%.
*Single number bets on 3 or Yo (11) carry true odds of 17 to 1, but the casino pays 15 to 1 odds on a winning bet. The house edge is 11.11%
*A Hi-Lo bet matches the odds of 3/11 bets with true odds of 17 to 1 and payout odds of 15 to 1. The house edge is also 11.11%.
*Any Craps bets (looking for 2, 3, or 12) have true odds of 8 to 1, payouts of 7 to 1 and that ever-large 11.11% house edge.
*C-E or Craps-Eleven bets have true odds of 5 to 1. The payouts vary at 3 to 1 for craps (2, 3, 12) and 7 to 1 on eleven. This also carries an 11.11% house edge.
*Any 7 bets have true odds of 5 to 1 with payout odds at 4 to 1. Any 7 has the largest house edge on the table at 16.67%.
*Horn bets carry a higher house edge of 12.5%. The true odds are 5 to 1. Payout odds are 27 to 4 on two or twelve and 3 to 1 on three or eleven. World or whirl bets are a variation of the horn bet on 2, 3, 7, 11 and 12. The true odds are 2 to 1. The payout odds on two or twelve are 26 to 5 and on three or eleven are 11 to 5. The corner proposition bets of Big 6 and Big 8 have been banned from Atlantic City casino craps tables because the odds make them such poor bets. With a large house edge of 9.09%, bets on Big 6 and Big 8 only payout even money, though the true odds of rolling a six or eight before a seven, like in Place 6/Place 8 bets is 6 to 5.Hardways Bets
Hardways proposition bets can be ongoing bets, but these are also costly bets to make. The hard four and hard ten bets have an 11.11% house edge and pay 7 to 1 if they win, but only carry an 11.11% chance of winning.
